the iPaq "legacy lite" version could be packaged as a consumer machine pretty easily - it sells for $549 in the Win98 version. DELL is unlikely to go much below that price point IMO.

CPQ's consumer business makes money, but their commercial PC business does not - it accounted for all of the looses in 3Q for CPQ, and then some - it also ate profit from consumer and enterprise business. DELL, on the other hand, has a profitable commercial PC business.

From that perspective, DELL probably does not want to see a price war in either the commercial or consumer space. They are already straining the business model to do low-end PCs, since this will impact overall ASPs. I personally don't think ASP has much to do with profitability or performance, especially in a new segment for DELL like consumers, but the analysts will surely pay attention to it.

I would expect DELL to do competitive pricing but not aggressively drive it down. Do you think Webpc will be under $500? Both CPQ and HP offer consumer machines at $499...
