Captain,
The big retailers have started their own dot comms. For a pure dot comm retailer to succeed in the long run, it is going to have to have a great business model or niche. Check out ELBO for a great cross between bricks, mortar, and cyber business. One compliments the other.

I think you need to do both and let the customer decide how he wants to buy your product. Don't forget, many retailers also did and still do a great deal of catalog business. The Neiman Marcus catalog made the Texas store famous and now they are all over the place. Putting those catalogs on the web can't be that difficult with the help of a good company like Compaq.

IMHO a duel distribution system will turn out to be a huge advantage to Compaq and their resellers. Buyers that want to deal direct with Compaq will do so, and buyers that want a reseller to service their account will do so. Why try and make that decision for your customers. Give them the power to make that decision. It will make them happy and serve the broadest market possible.
