At any rate, until CDMA carriers demonstrate that they really know how to do data, let alone high speed data, and that they can "do it better" which means making it easy and useful, I doubt if anyone will be quaking in their boots.

And how would an overlay affect the balance of power between the WCDMA QCOM royalty hijacking wannabees and CDMA2000 , and wouldn't an overlay create new dynamics that might not necessarily be in ATT's favor as it takes on WCOM?

Dave, are you a Q shareholder, and if so, why? With all the doubts you seem to have I can't imagine you have decided it was a good investment.

First, Airtouch is doing wireless internet now (14.4) and I believe Sprint is also but I haven't followed this too closely as I don't imagine there will be any major obstacles. I have a data cable that connects my Thinphone to my laptop. I will let you know how the service works within a week. I need to drive to an area that has wireless phone service since I live in a remote part of the county.

As far as "WCDMA QCOM royalty hijacking wannabees," can you elaborate? Do you really think there are companies planning to deploy mobile WCDMA without paying royalties to QCOM?
