Yesterday I posted a list of questions to ask about companies operating in the bowling alley. The following questions might be worth considering for companies operating in the tornado.
In the Tornado
As in the other list of questions, the management team is executing properly if the answer to a question is "Yes."

1)Is the company minimizing the customization of its product, thereby commoditizing it for general-purpose use?

2) Is the company's share of the market's profit greater than its share of the market's revenue?

3) Is the company expanding the distribution channel as fast as possible, realizing that a customer lost while the product is in the tornado is a customer lost for life?

4) Is the company shipping anything and everything, realizing that a customer gained in the tornado is a customer for life?

5) Is the company ignoring the customer, exemplified by Henry Ford's edict that "You can have any color Model-T you want as long as it's black."

6) Is the company lowering the price of the product, making it possible for mass adoption? (Probably applies more to hardware than software.)

Dealing with the Power of the Tornado
Unlike the other questions, the company is operating in the tornado properly if the answer to these questions is "No."

1) Is the company trying to control the forces of the tornado?

2) Is the company introducing discontinuity while the product is in the tornado?

3) Is the company designing service into the product? (This is somewhat of a corollary to the above question that asks if the company is minimizing customization and designing the product for all-purpose use.)
