Many thanks. My son agreed (had previously objected) to upgrade to Win98 (not 2nd edition). New motherboard is recognized, crash is gone. One problem remains--video

Card is Trident 9685 w/1mb. Win98 loads driver, but boots as if card was set way beyond monitor's resolution (was 600x800). Going thru safe mode forced it into 640x480 long enough to boot-get message from Win98:

There is a problem with your display setting - the adapter type is incorrect ro the current settings do not work with your hardware.

Does Win98 have problems with 1mb video cards?
