The specifics are long forgotten.

But AMD implemented a design/process tweak in Oct/Nov of 98 that should have boosted performance and yield of 400Mhz speeds.

Unfortunately the new mask with the CXT core bombed.

And devices not only failed to yield at 400Mhz but due to some anomoly most parts had to be binned at 300-333 speed grades.

This crap lasted thru mid Q1.

AMD lost OEMS as they had to scramble to offer alternative CPUs etc. And Intel took advantage of their speed leads to trash the low speed grade prices with multiple price cuts in dec/jan/march.

By the time AMD fixed the speed/yield problems they manufactured 6M units in Q2 and could only sell 4M of them.

And I am sure the rest you remember.
