Skeeter,

but, this isn't about me. it is about a magazine that is telling its subscribers (home business folks) that upgrading money IS NOT well spent right now.

No, it's saying that you don't have to spend the extra money for the systems that the very top end of the processor lines cost. That's a very common strategy that has been known and used for quite a long time -- one I'll probably use when I upgrade next Spring. The very top end usually costs an inordinate amount above the performance improvement.

However, the top end of the processor lines will soon be 800Mhz, then 850, 900, 1G, and so on. And when that happens, the 700Mhz systems' price will drop precipitously. Then the 800Mhz systems will follow. And so on. At those times, HOC will be recommending 700Mhz, then 750, 800, 850, 900, and so on. They won't stick with the 600Mhz systems forever.

As Ten pointed out, you'll probably get your 750Mhz system for $750 in late 2000.

p.s. I just bought a CD-RW drive yesterday. The minimum supported configuration is P-200, which I happen to have and which was the top-of-the-line model in the Summer of 1996 when I bought it. You haven't been able to get a P-200 for 2 years now. In 3 years, the 700Mhz PIII will be lower than the lowest end processor you'll be able to buy. If HOC doesn't track up the speed curve, what are they going to recommend -- that there readers go to garage sales?
