NW: I agree that bricks-and-mortar retailers are necessary for PC sales, especially in Europe. Even if people did rely on service back-up by telephone the cost of the telephone and the poor reputation that telephne service centres have here would discourage. (Most of them charge 50 pence per minute - or 80 US cents - and most of them require waiting). But if there is a wholesale move to simpler, more robust iPaq-like machines and to limited function appliances which can be plugged in and booted up like toasters by any technically inept mom and pop - perhaps the direct sellers will get more of the business if they offer substantial discounts on the reseller price and if the general cost of telecommunications comes down.
