CHINA TO DEVELOP TELECOM MARKET BEIJING - Telephone penetration in China is expected to rise at an average annual rate of two percentage points in the next five years to reach 22% by 2003 from the current 12% with focus placed on the rural and the western part of the country, said Wu Jichuan, Minister of the Information Industry. By 2003 the number of customers using fixed telephone will increase to 170 million or 180 million from the current 100 million while that using mobile telephones will rise to 100 million from the current 36 million.
