hi antguy,
re "when i boot the machine that it takes forever to finish"
are you running a utility suite like norton systemworks (or some other similar product) that may be set to scan files on start up? i'd look at that. i can tell you where to look if you have symantec software.
another thing that you can do is take a look at all the apps that are running on start up. i assume that you are running win98.
here is a good article/tutorial on using win98's system configuration utility...
smartcomputing.com
"To access SCU, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and select the System Information option from the list of features. Here you should see your system information (what operating system you're running, the amount of free system resources, etc.) From the menu bar in the Microsoft System Information window, go to Tools and click System Configuration Utility."
on the 'general' page, it's a good idea to create a backup right away so that you can restore things to their original settings if desired. from there i clicked on the 'startup' tab and began unchecking all of the items i felt i didn't want or need in my start up routine. remember to select 'apply', then 'OK'. you'll be prompted to reboot your pc. see if that makes things quicker.
let me know how it works, and remember to stop by
