Maybe you all can help. Recently, I've been sending Emails to the editors of the DVD player reviews.

Something that starts out like:
Recently you reviewed a couple of the inexpensive/cheap DVD players one from Raite, and another from Konka. Interestingly enough both players use DVD decoder chips from US based companies.
Raite uses a decoder from ESS Technologies and the Konka uses a Decoder from C-Cube Microsystems (don't take my word for it, open them up)... blah, blah, blah...

and finishes with:

I think you would do your readers a service if you started specifying which DVD decoder chips a player uses. It would help us to avoid some of the bugs that carry over from player to player when the same DVD decoder chip is used between them.

The Email address for the editor of the Raite and Konka reviews at Home Theater Magazine is:

mailto:hometheater@petersenpub.com

I am hoping that if enough people show interest, the mags will start looking a little deeper into the players and start specifying which decoder it uses.
