I haven't seen enough Wagner to know if this one's pace was especially slow, or they're all like that.

They're all like that.

But after all, Germans are known for being very conscientious about getting a good deal. Wagner hauled them in in droves by advertising that you get two operas for the price of one. This in turn kept the sleepy-eyed Nordics more or less awake through the whole shebang (even the Wotan monologues, interminable even by German standards), what with their not wanting to miss out on the value proposition. During the first and second intermissions, the bar's offerings were restricted by management to typically stiff cups of German coffee. Only during the third intermission would the hapless Teutonic tippler be able to wangle a schnapps.
