I wouldn't call that "a smart decision" because it implies that AMD could have gone with an alternative decision. AMD had no choice but to stick with an off-chip cache. They would love to move to an on-die version as soon as possible, but manufacturing concerns keep them from getting there.

So it's apparent that until Thunderbird (Thunderbolt? Thunderwing? Thunderthighs?) arrives, the Athlon core could lag behind Coppermine in performance scalability. The good news for AMD, however, is that Thundercracker is scheduled to appear in Q2 2000, I think.
