Actually social graces are at a rather low ebb, FT. And as for your analogy the gentleman on the deck will see a great many things but nothing in detail. He will have an impression of what is beneath, nothing more. The person in the canyon will be closer to what he observes and thus more likely to be correct. Interesting that you think the man on the deck has a better view. As a former research assistant I can tell you that the closer you are to what you study the better.

And most people when jostled react with anger which dulls critical thinking. Annoyed people are not the most cogent, IMO.
