I called a company called Flashcom that advertised in the NY Times, and they work with a company called Northpoint, as well as reselling some of the bells' DSL. here is the # for anybody ijnterested: 877 548 3900. They will run a check to see if they can put service in your area. They are a bit cheaper than most. I decided to go with their one-year contract via Northpoint where I believe my download rate will be around 450K. Not as much as Bell Atlantic's possible 1.5 million (which is pretty expensive), but I'm sure I'll be thrilled at the speed nearly 10 times as fast as my 56k modem. I've been frustrated lately by my university line dropping me spontaneously, about 4-6 times a day, or the online trading at Fidelity being slow, partly because of my modem. Apparently if I have a fast modem I can use Fidelity's PowerPro which is a kind of upgrade for Spartan traders. In any case, I've been using a T1 line at a place I consult for and that probably clinched it for me: pages downloading instantaneously.
