From Grant:

The Linux development kernel is always in a state of flux. There are currently huge sections of the kernel being modified to handle threads better. This will inevitably improve scalability. This is not the first time a major overhaul has taken place within the kernel and will not be the last. I remember in the 0.99 linux kernel, Linus decided to rewrite the scheduler completely. They are not scared to rip things apart and rebuild.

As far as I'm aware this is the only major area of deficiency. Linux's popularity is growing exponentially and developers are well aware of areas in need of improvement. There is very little red tape between the requirements of users and kernel developers - the main reason why open source is successful.

In my opinion the only reason for Gosling to be hesitant about Linux is to boost Solaris.

JC Jaros: I hope you eventually find the "right guy", and I hope my responses have at least been partially helpful to you.
