You're correct on the options, of course. Sigh. Well it was just a thought. I'm sorry to be a pest but I'm just sick with worry over the current situation in MSFT, and feel as if I should be doing...well, something, anyway! Normal business risks I've taken cheerfully for many years (I remember a few years back when everyone thought NSCP was going to drive MSFT out of business), but this flanking attack by a band of lawyers? Yuck!

Some of us fall somewhere in between your definitions; I'm a gambler at heart but leave most of my stake long. I do trade with my cash, and someday I'll be badly burned, but it does relieve the boredom when my longs aren't doing much, and it helps me beat the miserable 3% I'd otherwise earn. On average I've had $234K invested and earned $114K in short-term profits this year. That's on 10 trades of which only one was a loser (MRBA). The holding periods ranged from 1 day to 9 months.

I'm no genius, and obviously this record can't compare to being hip enough to buy an RHAT or QCOM and quadruple one's investment in a few months (or weeks!). I never seem to tumble to those opportunities - I'm too cautious to take an aggressive position in stocks where I can't see the earnings future. My speculatives such as SEBL always take years to pay off.

I suppose everyone could be making money on their trades on average, since the market's had a strong upward bias, eh?
