I hate arguments over labels, since in American politics, labels tend to obscure more than they reveal. Milton Friedman and Teddy Kennedy are both "liberals," while Richard Posner and Robert Bork are both "conservatives." Then, you've got Nazis and Communists considered to be opposites, when, in reality, they have more in common than either has with liberals.
I was merely using the term "left liberal" to distinguish Teddy Kennedy liberals from classical liberals. If the term "left liberal" is too loaded, I can use the term "social democrat," since that's another label, that they use in Europe, for the same thing.
As for the PAC thing, I was not trying to open up a debate on what a PAC is. I was merely trying to point out that, as I understand it, when handing out contributions, Microsoft does not discriminate on the basis of political orientation.
I also happen to think that any left liberal (or, if you prefer, social democrat) who is discovered to have received Microsoft money will be almost instantly discredited. |
