Provision Vision

The data-networking startup buying spree continued last week for traditional telecom equipment powers, with Nortel Networks Inc. picking up what could be a top jewel. By acquiring Shasta Networks Inc. (Sunnyvale, Calif.) for up to $340 million in stock, Nortel bolsters its capability for an emerging key concern for service providers: Internet protocol (IP) application differentiation. Shasta's product provides IP network edge gateway and access aggregation functions with a twist: Software features let service providers provision virtual private networks (VPNs), firewalls and other applications for thousands of subscribers based on centrally administered policies and a database of subscriber information. Nortel plans to marry this technology with its existing telephony expertise, a potentially potent combination.
