SunTone Takes Webtone to Dialtone-like Quality Of Service
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW YORK -- May 5, 1999 -- In order to simplify and speed up a customer's selection of web-hosted services, Sun today announced the SunTone[sm] certification and logo program. This program recognizes the investments made by Service Providers in process, methodology and infrastructure that help to ensure the delivery of secure, reliable, and predictable services.
Sun will publish the "SunTone Service Delivery Architecture Specification," which will specify the minimum requirements for quality of service, hardware infrastructure and operational processes. The specification will include a methodology for building services, providing quality of service, as well as running these services during periods of massive peaks/intense increases in demand. Service Providers must meet or exceed these minimum levels.
"We want to make webtone as reliable as dialtone," said Ed Zander, president and COO of Sun Microsystems, Inc. "We want to share our experience with building extremely scalable, reliable application delivery platforms with the Service Providers so they can put their business into overdrive. An end user customer should feel confident in a Service Provider who can claim that they are SunTone certified."
Value-added resellers, ISVs, web developers, system integrators and others who must deliver high quality web-based services will find the SunTone architecture critical in deploying services that meet high QoS (Quality of Services) standards.
Sun will work with various Service Providers to finalize the architectural specification and expects to have a draft specification available by July 1, 1999. |
