Company Press Release
Cabletron Captures 97% Market Share in Layer 3 WAN Switching
Dell'Oro Group Ranks Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router #1 in Total WAN Port Shipments
ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 30, 1999--Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today announced that its application-aware, wire-speed SmartSwitch Router (SSR) has captured the number one spot in total shipment of Layer 3 switched WAN ports, according to the Dell'Oro Group.

``WAN modules set Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router apart,' said Chris Stix, managing director at SG Cowen and Company. ``High port density T1 and T3 capabilities make the SSR ideal for service provider applications, particularly on the WAN edge of the network. This has traditionally been a router stronghold, but next-generation products - such as Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router that combines high-speed routing and switching, with a full complement of WAN capabilities - will be the product of choice for service providers moving forward. The SSR is the clear market leader in this space.'

``Cabletron is reducing the cost of the network edge infrastructure and enabling the delivery of new, managed services by offering an all-in-one solution that encompasses high-speed WAN access with the security, bandwidth provisioning and QoS of Layer 3 switches,' explained Bill Burger, Cabletron's senior marketing director of service provider solutions.

Leading ISPs such as Mindspring Enterprises (NASDAQ:MSPG - news) and EarthLink (NASDAQ:ELNK - news), established carriers such as China's Shanghai JinShan Telecom and Korea's Daewoo Telecom, emerging broadband network providers such as Australia's UEComm, and cable operators such as Adelphia Communications, are all deploying the SSR in their networks. The Layer 4 capabilities of the SSR, along with rate limiting, leading QoS capabilities, access control and accounting, enable these providers to deliver leading hosting, Internet access and multimedia broadband services.

Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router family continues to earn recognition for its industry-leading performance and functionality, obtaining Internet Week Magazine's ``Best of Breed' Award in May 1999, as well as ``Product of the Year' from Network Magazine in May 1999.

The ``Q3 Shared Hub and LAN Switch Report,' issued by the Dell'Oro Group on November 18, 1999, also found that Cabletron's SSR was number one in the Layer 3 modular switching, with 31.6% market share for the period July through September 1999. This marks the third consecutive quarter that the SSR has had number one market share in the fastest growing segment of the data communications market.
