Rick,

<<Sequenom>>

Bill themselves as "industrial genomics." They package MALDI-TOF with a proprietary sample chip (unlike AFFX, this is generic and doesn't require a custom chip for different analyses) and all the up-stream goodies to give "high-throughput" DNA analysis. Their current product is targeted at SNP genotyping.

The current market for SNP genotyping is one of expectations exceeding needs and a whole bunch of hype. The parameters that'll drive market leaders in this field are probably throughput and cost (not surprisingly), but the nuances in how throughput and cost are defined are where it gets tricky. Several competitors in this field have put out hype numbers where basically they take the maximum speed of the analysis step and multiply by 24 hours (ignoring upstream prep, replication, assay design, etc.). Sorta like the microprocessor bragging numbers on MFLPs.

Sequenom uses a primer extension reaction and a direct (as in untagged) MS detection and claims that the resulting difference in accuracy gives them a large advantage in actual speed versus people who use hybridization and fluorescense detection.

Primary competitors are AFFX, Taqman from PE, Orchid, Rapigene, Third Wave, Illumina, Kiva Genetics, and some others I'm forgetting.
