Siemens Selects Virata's(R) Helium(TM) Processor
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Virata© (Nasdaq: VRTA - news) announced today that the Broadband Access Division of Siemens Information and Communication Networks Inc. (Frankfurt Neuer Markt: SIE) will adopt Virata's Helium(TM) chip for use in its next-generation asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) modem, which the equipment maker plans to deploy worldwide.

``Siemens is a leader in the global communications industry and we are pleased to be working with them,' said Charles Cotton, Virata's CEO. ``This is another strong step in the industry's acceptance of our ISOS (integrated software on silicon) strategy.'

Albrecht Baur, president of Siemens' Broadband Access Division, called Virata's Helium solution ``an ideal fit with his design team's roadmap,' and added: ``The key advantages of the Helium technology are the implementation-friendly architecture, resulting in short development cycles, and the support of advanced ATM-features.'

Virata's Helium is a low-cost, physical layer (PHY)-neutral communications processor that provides high-speed Internet access capability for single- and multiple-user endpoint devices such as Universal Serial Bus (USB) modems, home gateway devices and small office/home office (SOHO) routers. The Helium chip is fully integrated with a complete networking and protocol software suite that handles routing, bridging and signaling functions, as well as simple network management protocol (SNMP).

Siemens will utilize Helium, and related software, in its next generation NT, or network termination point, which provides an ADSL connection with an Ethernet port for Internet access, as well as an ATM port for real-time services for the customer premises.

The NT is part of XpressLink, Siemens' advanced, service independent, broadband access system based upon ATM over xDSL transport. The XpressLink system consists of a DSLAM with universal slot architecture for different xDSL technologies and a complete family of customer premises equipment. The value of XpressLink is further reinforced by an advanced end-to-end management integration. XpressLink is the ideal basis for a wide range of applications, covering business oriented as well as residential and SOHO (Small Office / Home Office) scenarios. Included are applications such as high-speed Internet access, telecommuting, virtual private LAN, LAN interconnection, and streaming multimedia content.
