DMF, I don't have exact figures, but here are my ballpark estimates. I think the U.S. retail market currently makes up about 10%-15% of the total worldwide PC market. Previously, AMD dominated the retail market with their K6-x line of processors, but Intel responded with Celeron and now have taken back that market.
As for direct sales, I suppose if something isn't sold in the retail channel (i.e. Costco, Sears, CompUSA), it's considered direct. But then you have to divide out direct sales into home and business, and then divide out the business segment into the small business sub-segment and the sub-segment of massive IT department purchases.
In this area, I don't know how AMD is doing, but I'd imagine they've still only claimed a miniscule share of the total sales in the direct channel. I think AMD has made some headway into direct sales to homes and small businesses, but their presence in the large business market is practically nil.
Remember, these are all wild guesses on my part. Hopefully someone can clarify things, or at least point us to a link which can provide a bigger picture than what the sound-bite-lovin' press gives.
