Thanks, I am not surprised, but was uncertain. Anyway, parties function on one level to debate policy, and on another to promote candidates and win elections. It is inevitable that there should be a move toward the center when it perceived as advantageous, and a tendency to imitate even one's opponents in the hope of fielding successful candidates and running state of the art campaigns. The dilemma is when the characteristics necessary for mass campaigns conflict with the qualities desirable for real leadership. One reason that it is good to have a federal system is that there are more positions to enable potential leaders to hone their skills and gain experience, and to permit significant rivalry. The more competition, the better, generally, if only as a matter of consumer choice. Someone suitable is likely to eventually arise....... |
