RE: Web apps and thin-client

Both these examples recently given, MyWebOS and GraphOn, are excellent examples of fundamental trends in user software.

There is a lot of history behind both these trends and numerous competitors lining up for the next cycle of deployment.

The questions I ask myself are:

- what can anyone do in this area that Microsoft can't?
-- Microsoft is already moving into these areas
-- both web-served apps and thin-client computing are fundamental enough that they will be incorporated into the desktop paradigm
-- how can these companies prosper when Microsoft commoditizes these technologies?

- to what extent do these technologies endanger the Wintel desktop dominion?
-- my answer: to a very great extent ... a combination of web-based apps and thin-client support means that other platforms (esp, Linux) can rapidly deploy end-user desktop experiences that challenge Windows for completeness
-- barriers to entry are conspicuously lacking as Microsoft's licensing control over the box-sellers is eroded
-- whoops. Mr Bill blindsided again ... does he have enough shots left in the locker to hold off another surge of bar-bar-ians?

In Y2000, it will be possible to buy a Wintel-free PC which offers essentially the same or better early-user experience than Windows + Office.
