<<My thought is, if there is a salary cap, then who pockets all the excess $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ - oh - the owners do.... guess what ?>>

As you well know that's how we got into this mess. Owners were pocketing a fortune and players wanted there fair share. Problem is what's fair share anymore. Everyone keeps raising the bar. And the people paying for it are the ticket holders.

However, there is more than one way to try and cure the problem. It's most obvious of the four components, owners, players, fans and the league that the league is suffering bigtime and fans are not far behind.
A team salary cap would benefit those with less, like small market teams and most obvious canadian teams, but the question is will this create richer owners. Most likely but short term IMO.
What if teams were allowed to go over the cap but in return, return to "the league" 30% of what they paid over the cap. That's one idea that would benefit both parties.
Problem with this league though is "owners" are the ones running the show. Until we have true impartial leadership we'll always be in trouble.
