Yeah, i know what you mean... I don't know about your 'area team', but here, it is more like a 'party atmosphere' to go to a game.... people go to drink, see, and be seen, and half of them don't know much about the game itself, except that it was invented 10 years ago by some guy named Gretski... (sic). I am in Omaha NE, where hockey is a truly loved game - by those that are 'old time folk'.... there isn't much here sports-wise besides a college football team that is usually ranked in the top 10..... and we have a USHL team that had something like 260 straight sellouts, 26 home games a season, in an 8,000 seat arena that is damned near 70 years old. They'd tear it down, except for one, and ONLY one reason: the guy that owns the team has a contract to play there that the arena cannot get out of. Here is a true story (I was there) - Lincoln NE got a USHL franchise 3 years ago, a group of us went to a game in Lincoln - something like the 4th or 5th home game they had. After the 3rd period, and the teams left, a few hundred fans from Lincoln simply would not leave. WHY ? God's honest truth: they were waiting for the 4th quarter. We tried to explain it to them, they finally believed us - about 45 minutes later. We hung around just to watch them and see if they really were waiting for the 4th quarter. They were. |
