The hooks currently exist to allow this in the wares we've discussed here, but many service providers still remain somewhat anal to this kind of prospect. It only takes one, though, and then the others will follow.

The feedback I've gotten with regard to "self-provisioning" technology is that it's a fine idea if your customers are other carriers. I think that when you get to the scale of having potentially millions of users provisioning their own services, carriers get a little nervous for numerous reasons. First, there's security: you are allowing customers to mess with your equipment. Then there's reliability: How much money will you lose if this thing breaks?

Like you said, though, all it takes is one guy with some intestinal fortitude...
