Sitting in a Holiday Inn in Ottawa reading the Financial Post and just came across this item related to the Cisco wireless announcement. A small Calgary company called Wi-Lan is taking on Cisco head-on on this one. They were recently bid up on the TSE exchange due to speculation they would be licensing their wireless technology to Cisco or be acquired by same. Cisco made this announcement the day before Wi-Lan and their partner Phillips semiconductor were to host a symposium on Wi-Lan's technology (which Wi-Lan says is protected by patent). Cisco's corporate lawyers disagree and it is forming its own consortium to promote similar technology (through its purchase of Clarity Wireless). Wi-Lan's CEO's comment was "It's nice to know we can make a $300 billion company jump". This fellow is either knows something we don't or likes to play chicken with freight trains. Stock dropped $6.00 to 37.00 (Canadian) yesterday before Cisco's announcement. Not sure what it did today.
