Still though, the Nortel statement is troubling. It would be nice to have a better idea of what spectrum is available, what's been allocated (and to whom), and what is left.

The only thing I find troubling about the Nortel statement is it doesn't agree with anything I have seen elsewhere (for CDMA carriers). I am open to new information, but untill I see evidence to the contrary, I must assume the Nortel exec. is wrong. Either that or he was talking only about TDMA carriers. If CDMA carriers were maxed out a month ago, with the sub growth rate we have, the capacity problems would be hitting the news wire or carriers would have started rejecting new subs. Let's not let one unfortunate quote lead us astray.

Speaking of carriers that do have serious capacity problems, the AT&T digital cable guy was at our house today for a minor problem with our tv service. He told me that planned digital upgrades to numerous communities in our area had been recently cancelled from lack of funds. He was also talking about how the wireless spin-off was possibly going to be huge dollar wise. Then he mentioned how he and all his co-workers had gone without raises for two years but thought it was necessary since ATT needed capital and the workers would be rewarded with their stock options. Then he told me how his bosses were riding the wave of the future and it was all going to be wireless data! And all of this was just pouring out of his mouth, I don't even know why he was telling me this although I was finding it fascinating. But what really struck me was the sudden cancellation of digital cable services to these tens of thousands of people that would be relatively easy to service, and what was the reason? Cash. So where is all the cash going to go? Could AT&T be investing in CDMA sooner than we expect?
