CMGI's AltaVista Plans Share Sale, Discusses Merger, FT Says

Palo Alto, California, Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- CMGI Inc's AltaVista Co., an Internet search service, is planning a March share sale that is expected to see the company valued at more than $5 billion, the Financial Times reported, citing AltaVista Chief Executive Rod Schrock. AltaVista has also discussed with CMGI, which owns an 83 percent majority stake in the company, a possible tie-up with Lycos Inc., another leading Internet search service. Schrock said a listing would benefit CMGI and Compaq Computer Corp., which owns the rest of AltaVista, and confirmed he had discussed the Lycos merger with CMGI Chief Executive David Wetherell, adding a tie-up would create the ``second biggest Internet new media company after Yahoo!,' the FT reported.

AltaVista, based in the Californian town of Palo Alto, was the eleventh most visited Web site in October with 10.3 million visitors, according to Media Metrix Inc., a New York-based Internet research firm.
