Compaq Says Profits to Be Hurt
By Costs to Replace PC Line
By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter

HOUSTON -- Compaq Computer Corp. said first-quarter earnings will be hurt by the cost of providing replacements for a line of computers it will discontinue.

Company Profile: Compaq Computer

The replacements will lower operating profit by as much as $150 million for the quarter, the company said a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing. Compaq had previously said earnings would take a hit ranging from $50 million to $100 million for the current quarter. A spokesman said the figure increased as the company was better able to assess the cost of providing the computers.

Analysts estimated the impact on first-quarter earnings at as much as eight cents a share. First Call/Thomson Financial calculated estimates of first-quarter operating profit at 18 cents a share.

Compaq will provide replacement computers to owners of its Alpha computers running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT operating system.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday in New York Stock Exchange trading, Compaq closed down 62.5 cents at $24.4375.
