El: I have probably further confused matters - my only excuse being that I posted very early this morning with sleep in my eyes.

The WSJ report is about 1Q - all my comments assumed it was 4Q. In fact, the 1Q expenses was already dealt with in the CC.

I agree with Russ that this should be a write-off.

But maybe COMPAQ is ashamed of all the write-offs it is taking. There have been enough write-offs to restructure it into a widget manufacturer.
