That is something I am uncertain of. As you know, there is widespread protectionism in the agricultural sectors of virtually every country, and there are usually strategic protected industries. However, German is a capital rich nation, with much investment flowing East, and is less prone to protectionist ruses than many nations, and certainly less prone to overt trade actions. The French have been the worst among European nations on agricultural issues. It has also been one of the most heavy handed on "cultural regulation". I would suppose that that accounts for their interest. The British are pretty much taking our part, I believe (I have been distracted, so I may be a bit off on this), and probably are taking a particular interest on the basis of Anglo- American solidarity. I would guess that Germany supposes that the Americans will mostly get their way, and is content to play a quieter role....... |
