The placebo response is a huge problem for many trials. There are areas like urinary incontinence where they are very hard pressed to come up with statistical significance despite large trials - the people on placebo just keep improving throughout the trial.

Often the placebo works even better in a trial than it "should" - look at CLGY for a recent example.

I wonder whether companies have fantasized about an "anti-placebo" message - "Remember, you may just be getting a sugar pill. On no account get better just because you think you're getting something good ..." <g>
