I agree that there is something absurd about the "forgiveness" of those who have not been hurt. Possibly they are trying to forgive the psychic harm they feel that they have experienced, trying to overcome the heightened sense of fear that these murders caused?

However, to try to forgive on behalf of the injured and bereft when one is not bereft is illogical and seems out of place altogether.
