How about those 3G patent sharing negotiations! Looks as though Qualcomm can now torture the 3G GSM gang the way they were tortured for years.

Q! can delay and delay unless their royalty demands are met [say 10% to undercut the 15% or 20% or 30% which GSM charges] while rolling out their HDR and cdma2000. By the time the GSM gang realize they are making no headway, NTT and others will be lunging at HDR to try to fend of the competition.

Jan 7 2000 is when some decent CDMA data starts pouring out across the spectrum in Japan. NTT will start sweating seriously then.

Most carriers and people still seriously believe there is little demand for data, just because demand was hopeless all through the 1990s. That was a slow and expensive problem as well as unstable and generally no good.

Now the world is different, but people still think the old data markets apply. Well, they are going to get a BIG surprise.

Having a LOT of fun!

Jon Koplik got it right! < Re : ... the 3G Patent Platform, set up by the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) ... It will be set up as a new, nonprofit company called NewCo
Was that "NewCo" or "Screw Q " ??

But black has the losing position. Go Q Go...

Incidentally, engineer wrote: Any form of rollout of packet is a GREAT thing. It opens the way for alot of innovators to start new businesses which could not be otherwise rolled out. I know of a business in NZ which will be rolling out in Japan on 7 January to coincide with the data launch! Engineer is spot on!
