Excellent post. A couple of comments on the OS wars... 1. Big Iron - UNIX consolidation to Solaris Sun is tried and true UNIX (and the best big iron UNIX benchmark wise) and they have the marketing hype lessons with the ". in .com" bit. As a result they are cleaning up the big iron market. IMHO Sun will continue to steal business away from IBM/HP/CPQ and is the primary beneficiary from back-end web related iron purchases. It is becoming the defacto big iron solution. 2. Mid-end ; 2000/Linux For mid-end (4-8 way) price/performance is superior with x86 iron and 2000 or Linux. As Linux becomes a more accepted environment we may see migrations from big-iron installs to multi-machine Linux installs; simply because the price point is sweet. 2000 will probably keep most of the existing NT server market ... but may lose some to Linux; again price point is nice. 3. Desktop ; Win9x/NT/2000 No question that Msft is the superior desktop environment. The only question (revenue wise) is will people upgrade their win95/98/NT boxes to 2000 ; that's the $1M dollar question... or should I say $1B question. /James
