Whoa there.

A small number of vandals -- estimated at about 100 out of some 30,000 demonstrators -- engaged in acts of violence and destruction. Interestingly, the police in some cases were shown ignoring these vandals, rather than moving in and arresting them. (One wonders whether they were given instructions to let the vandalism proceed in order to provide an excuse for cracking down and discrediting the entire protest movement.)

But the violations of the few cannot be permitted to deny central constitutional rights to the thousands who sought and seek peaceably and nonviolently to assemble and petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Mayor Schell has declared portions of Seattle a "First Amendment Free" zone. In that zone, the Constitution is suspended in favor of a police state.

This is a far greater threat to democracy than anything the WTO delegates are doing today.
