Dell Computer Corp. said that it has just stopped shipments and manufacturing of its systems which have the new Pentium III chips, while it performs more testing in its labs.

It seems to me that Intel has gotten very lazy of late in testing and software. For the last couple of years, at an increasing rate, they have delivered products with problems. That's not new, all new products have problems, but increasingly they don't locate them themselves. It's up to the OEMS to sweat through trying this and that until they can point out exactly what happened to Intel. It seems that they build a set of tests based on the design, and then never vary the testing unless and until a specific root cause is shown to them. The hard part is that Intel does not even give out information on the "hidden" features which are supposed to make the testing possible, everything has to be done by inference. I hope the 820 and the Coppermine (and may others) start to make them realize that they can't see the world by gazing at their navel.
