SCM Microsystems Receives First Microsoft Accreditation for its Windows 2000 Supported USB Smart Card Reader Leader in Smart Card Readers Delivers Unique Implementation of New Industry Standard LAS VEGAS, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- SCM Microsystems, Inc., (Nasdaq: SCMM; Neuer Markt: SMY), a leader in enabling simple and secure access to emerging digital platforms and applications, has clinched certification for its USB smart card reader by the PC Smart Card Consortium (PC/SC). The PC/SC compliance consortium is lead by Microsoft Corp. and aims to extend the Windows(TM) operating system to handle smart card-specific protocols and interfaces. The USB smart card reader, called SCR300, will be demonstrated at the SCM booth in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Pavilion at Comdex 1999.
``Microsoft recognized early the potential of smart card technology for user authentication, and has incorporated support for smart cards in our Windows 2000 operating system,' said Mike Dusche, product manager at Microsoft. ``SCM Microsystems is an acknowledged leader in providing easy-to-use, standards-based devices that enable secure access to this technology and ensure its rapid deployment. The company has demonstrated its commitment to strong adoption for smart cards with the early-to-market release of its USB smart card reader.'
Businesses embracing e-commerce need to protect sensitive or valuable information in a convenient and secure environment, and provide secure access to their on-line services. Smart cards are an ideal security token, capable of providing user authentication for access control to PCs or networks and storing user credentials to enable protected applications or services. Smart cards provide a mobile, reliable and low-cost approach to create a ubiquitous security infrastructure that enables the rapid emergence of Internet-based applications such as on-line shopping, home banking and business-to-business e-transactions.
SCM Microsystems' smart card readers provide a cost-effective, universal and secure interface between smart cards and PCs, and can communicate with any smart card, regardless of the manufacturer.
The SCM Microsystems SCR300 USB smart card reader is already fully supported by Windows 2000 and compliant with Microsoft Smart Cards for Windows, and will be available in production in early 2000. The product enables smart cards to be read through the fastest interface port available. SCM Microsystems will customize the product in both feature and form factor to accommodate the requirements of its OEM customers.
