mindmeld, eric "CISCO WILL NEVER OVERTAKE LU IN SALES" as long as this type of Market share reports come. Are you willing to bet against this. Here is the good news you guys are waiting for.

DEC 1, 1999, M2 Communications - MURRAY HILL, N.J. -- According to the latest reports from three market analyst firms, Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) held the number one market position in worldwide remote access concentrator sales to service providers - including Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and other carriers - in the third quarter.

The Dell'Oro Group, Cahners In-Stat Group and Synergy Research Group all report that Lucent is the leading provider of Remote Access Concentrators (RACs) - devices ISPs and telecommunications carriers use to connect their customers to high-speed data communications networks and the Internet.

In addition, Synergy reported that Lucent leads the worldwide service provider voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) market. Dell'Oro Group said Lucent led in overall RAC port shipments and revenues, with 36 percent and 39.4 percent of the market, respectively. Lucent held an even greater share of sales specifically to carriers and service providers, with 42 percent of revenues in that market. This marks the seventh consecutive quarter in which Lucent has led this important category, according to the Dell'Oro Group.

Cahners In-Stat Group declared Lucent the market share leader in worldwide RAC units shipped, ports shipped, manufacturer sales and sales to service providers. Lucent's market share in service provider sales year to date reached 36.7 percent. Cahners In-Stat Group also reaffirmed Lucent as the port shipment leader in the total remote access market, which includes RACs as well as remote access servers.

Synergy Research Group reported that Lucent led the RAC market, winning 36.3 percent of worldwide service provider revenues and leading the nearest competitor by more than 10 percentage points. For the third consecutive quarter, Lucent was also the service provider market share leader for VoIP equipment, with 42.8 percent of ports shipped and 35 percent of revenues.

"Lucent has again reaffirmed its leadership in the remote access and VoIP marketplace," said Jeremy Duke, president, Synergy Research Group. "The combination of Lucent's existing RAC and VoIP products and the market-leading offerings gained through the acquisition of Ascend has strengthened the company as a leader in these strategic networking equipment markets."

"These three reports show clearly that Lucent has the preferred solutions for ISPs and service providers - leading-edge customers who demand the best," said Curt Sanford, group president, Lucent InterNetworking Systems. "This is another proof that the integration of Lucent and Ascend has been very successful and is creating the market impact and customer value we want." Lucent completed its merger with Ascend Communications in June 1999. Lucent remote access products included in the market analyses were the MAX TNT and MAX family of wide area network (WAN) access switching products, and the PortMaster 3 remote access concentrator.

Lucent serves the remote access concentrator market with a full range of products, including the recently announced MAX 3000, a remote access concentrator that provides a new level of affordability and scaleability for the mid-sized ISP and enterprise data markets.
