The connection that Airtouch offers is a SOFTWARE bridge, not a modem thing. what they are doing is agreeing to pass the IP packets to your regular ISP, rather than their own one. This is simply like just setting up the environment where the packets are interpreted to make it look like they are from your other ISP.

I think alot of the carriers will want to keep you captive on their own ISP, alot like AOL does. You can however log into AOL if you have an account with them and use AOL services from any ISP. My son does this now using Roadrunner to provide the packet data pipe and then connects into AOL for the ISP services.
