You're onto it. I was thinking in terms of Java's object orientation and the flexibility to accommodate that provides. The definition of ATHM is accommodation and facilitation. They help you to get where you want to go today.

That doesn't mean the company is the end rather it is the means. This way ATHM doesn't try to do what belongs to other companies. ATHM helps sites to express themselves in whatever way those sites seek and remains neutral towards how well it plays. So the critical ingredient that presumably protects against the OA threat is the contentless content. The content that is within ATHM's resources is the structure to enable others to provide content. It is other company's sites which are the vehicle. The purpose of Excite! is to create the tools to build and facilitate the framework that supports other company's sites.
