Also, I was amazed to read that Microsofts investments are now worth $18 Billion.
That is a lot of stock.
Intel also is a large holder of stocks that will encourage its technology.

Evidently, DELL is now also taking positions in other companies.

It is a way of cementing a relationship with another company (they will be cautious of making deals with a competitor of a large shareholder). It also allows access to up and coming technology. A R&D team can only have so many ideas to work on at once.

This is very common in the drug stock world. They regularly make deals and take stakes in the biotechs to get first dibs on new discoveries.
