Spanking doesn't really teach respect--it teaches fear. It violates a small child's personal space and very soul, and destroys trust and love. It teaches children that bigger people beat up little people to gain power, and so they emulate this behavior when they get older by doing the same thing to the less powerful. Spanked children are much more likely to end up committing crimes than children who were not spanked, and according to a Canadian Medical Association study released in October, they are also twice as likely to develop drug and alcohol problems in adulthood as children who were not spanked.
