Stan,
A friend was showing me his digital camera had a Sandisk memory card. He explained that the memory is quite different from DRAM, SRAM,etc. Infact, the memory cells are imbedded in an ASIC. The ASIC is what gives it the proprietary nature-- does QCOM ring a bell?

By the way. I have a digital camera that uses the alternative memory card. It is fragile and I have had trouble with two different cards. The Sandisk card, on the other hand is rugged and the circuits are protected from mishandling.
