<<Wal-Mart's Sales Rise, Sam's Club Lags

Dec 2 8:46am ET

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, said on Thursday its sales at stores open more than a year increased 5.6 percent, as its wholesale club division dragged down the results at its discount stores and supercenters.

Total sales for the company increased 24.0 percent to $15.02 billion for the four weeks ended Nov. 26 from $12.12 billion.

Wal-Mart reported a 6.4 percent increase in November's same-store sales at its discount stores and supercenters, which are hybrid discount-grocery stores.

Sam's Club, the company's warehouse club division, reported same-store sales increases of 2.5 percent for the month -- well below the 11.9 percent increase in last November's sales at stores open more than a year.

Total sales for the 43 weeks ended Nov. 26 increased 19.5 percent to $130.32 billion from $109.03 billion, while sales at stores open more than a year increased 7.7 percent.

As of Nov. 30, Wal-Mart had 1,803 discount stores, 682 Supercenters, and 457 Sam's Clubs in the United States. The company also has stores in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the United Kingdom. Wal-Mart has joint venture stores in China and South Korea.">>
