Heinz,

Re y2k being a "non-event," here's a single data point:

Iran, which I believe supplies 20% of the world's oil (though none of the U.S.'s..) has an entire infrastructure (refineries, banking, power, phones) that needs to be upgraded for y2k. All stuff put in during the Shah's U.S.-friendly reign.

Most of their needed fixes and patches come from Hughes and other U.S. companies. But those companies won't -- aren't allowed by U.S. LAW! -- to upgrade Iran.

Iran has even tried going through the UN to get the U.S. companies to release the needed upgrades. Didn't work...the U.S. companies said "No can do, folks!"

So you've got an entire country that will try to "fix on failure" with no access to needed upgrades.

What's the 70's line? "Have a nice day"?

regards,

doug
